This book is an exception to my general rule. DK Publishing has done a really good job of presenting this beautiful city in stunning color photography, good maps, and enough words to present the city completely and accurately. A visual guide to Stockholm makes sense because Stockholm is such a visually appealing city. It works. The aerial photograph of Gamla Stan that opens the catalog chapters of this guide will just blow your hair back!

Obviously, those readers and travelers who enjoy art and architecture will also enjoy this book.

The coverage is good, with chapters dedicated to Gamla Stan, the City Center, Blasieholmen, Skeppsholmen, Djurgarden, and (especially) Sodermalm. I was slightly disappointed that the "excursions" chapter did not include pieces on Visby and Uppsala, without a doubt the best excursions from Stockholm. The guide includes particularly good sections on Stockholm's many superb museums.

Listings are not entirely comprehensive, and tend to focus on the excruciatingly expensive luxury segment. If you're most concerned about a pragmatic guide with comprehensive listings covering the entire range of prices and options, the Rough Guide will be a better choice (but be sure to get a recent edition! Rough Guides go out of date quickly since they tend to focus on the quirky, "off-the-beaten-path" options).

The guide begins with a brief overview of Parisian history. Next, it covers fourteen of the city's districts - the Ile de la Cité and the Ile St-Louis, the Marais, Beaubourg and Les Halles, the Tulieries, St-Germain-des-Prés, the Latin Quarter, the Jardin des Plantes, the Luxembourg Quarter, Montparnasse, Invalides and the Eiffel Tower Quarter, Chaillot, the Champs-Elysées, the Opéra Quarter, and Montmarte. There is also a section about some outlying areas.

The thing I like most about this series of travel guides is the amount of information that is given. For the novice, there is probably too much "stuff" packed into this guide. There are many sites and cultural tips that one could not hope to see in a week-long trip. It would be easy to be overwhelmed. This is also not the guide for those who want to study the life of the modern Parisian. Although it provides a lot of info, this guide does not do much more than scratch the surface.

There are those travelers who fall in between the novice and the expatriate, such as myself, the "Joe Friday" type - "Just the facts, ma'am." When I travel, I prefer to walk around a city until I'm lost. Then, and ONLY then, will I pull out my guidebook. As with the other DK Eyewitness Travel guides, I can whip this book out, find the section of the city in which I am lost, and find out one or two interesting things about everything around me. Armed with this little bit of information, I can decide whether I want to find out more by asking the locals. Invariably, when I have decided I am "done" with being lost, the excellent maps in this book get me back to wherever I want to be in a snap.

Liked it for what I needed it. It only gives a VERY BRIEF overview of what there is to see and to do. You basically just get a general idea and then you have to do some more research yourself. I was lucky I was visiting a friend who lived there. Not a good guide book if you're going on your own and need to rely on it.

Liked the abundance of photos.

It seemed like they included mostly all very touristy attractions. There's other things to do in NZ that are very cool and sometimes even free and should be mentioned.

Also, I wish they had talked a little bit more about camp grounds and hostels. I found that to be a great alternative to pricey hotels while traveling around.

Additionally, you also have to get a more detailed map of the major cities (usually I found them for free at the I-Sites) and the roads if you're traveling by car.

No mention in the book about the tour buses like Kiwi Adventures. Would have been useful to know about but I'm glad I didn't use those buses after all.

If you are heading to Germany you must get this guide. It was very helpful in planning a trip from Berlin to Munich and the Bavarian Alps. It lays out towns in Germany and what to see in each. We stopped at some wonderful villages on the way and this guide could not be beat. The region by region analysis is great and is useful for planning if you are only heading to one area. If you are just going to Berlin I would get their Berlin guide as this would be a little too much. Otherwise this is the only guide to use for a trip to Germany.

Even if you have been there many times (I have), you will always find new and interesting sights to visit and new information you didn't know about. What I like most is the detailed map section that covers most of the central city, that is the part you would want to visit as a tourist anyway. The street-by-street pictorial maps are excellent, but not always true to detail. The general index (for looking up things) is very good. However, on the downside, I would have liked to see more budget options in the "where to stay"-chapter. Nevertheless, probably the best guidebook.
