Google shows off new Google TV

Google TVAt the Google I/O event, Google gave the attendees a sneak peak of the next version of Google TV and boy does it look good. Based on Honeycomb, the new Google TV will support a lot of new features not present in the current version: a brand new user interface, widgets, notifications and of course – the Android Market where users can download new apps or rent movies and purchase music. Developers will also have access to the Google TV emulator, a new SDK and the ability to test their apps on Google TV devices. With the new version of Honeycomb enabling USB support and hardware 3D acceleration, it looks like Google TV might even be prepped to run games in the future.
The new Google TV should be arriving late this summer. Hopefully the new features in addition to the content from the Android Market will give the set top box the boost it needs to bounce back onto its feet.

Little Story About ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101

The world's love affair with tablets may have been bubbling along under the surface for a while, but it really got started in earnest during CES 2010. Back in those wild days, you could see 15-inch jumbo screens, TV tuners, and even hybrid pseudo-laptops stalking the tablet area of your favorite trade show. ASUS was there too, of course, though it still believed in the upstart smartbook category -- a modernized take on the netbook that relied on an ARM CPU and a mobile OS to extract more battery life out of a lighter, thinner device -- and was busy showing off a seductively slim prototype of just such a machine. Alas, nothing came of that Neo concept, most likely because it was relying on Android 1.6 and a Tegra 2 system-on-chip that was then still months away from hitting the market.

Today, however, is a different day. The 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 is finally being produced in volume, Google has evolved Android to version 3.0, specifically targeting higher-resolution displays, and ASUS has abandoned the idea that a keyboard is crucial to mobile computing. No, wait, that last bit's still there. The Eee Pad Transformer is a 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet very much in keeping with the current trend, but it also has an optional keyboard dock that turns it into a, you guessed it, instant smartbook. So, does that mean you'll get two devices in one or has ASUS been overly ambitious and compromised too much? We got to grips with the £380 16GB WiFi-only model and its keyboard buddy (£430 when bought as a pair) in an effort to find out. Answers await just past the break.

Little Story About Dell Streak 7 Android Tablet

The first half of 2011 is shaping up to be all about tablets. Truly, the tablet mania that everyone was so adamant about last year is finally here. While dozens of tablets were announced and shown off at CES in January, most of them won't be arriving until later this month or the March time frame at the earliest. The main reason for the delay is because most manufacturers are stuck waiting for Google to release Android 3.0, or Honeycomb, the first version of Android to be configured specifically for use on tablets. Motorola has the honor of releasing the first Honeycomb device, the Xoom. Of the tablets announced at this year's CES though, one of the first to be released is Dell's new Streak 7.

Part of Dell's Streak family, the Streak 7 was able to beat most of the tablets seen at CES to market, because Dell has made the decision to launch it with Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. This means that the Streak 7, like the Streak 5 before it, won't be released with a version of Android designed specifically for tablets, but rather a recent version of what is largely considered a handset OS.

The Dell Streak 7 is powered by NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2 SoC, putting it on par with some of the more powerful upcoming tablets like the Motorola Xoom as well as the Viewsonic gTablet which we recently reviewed. The Streak 7 is also the first dual-core seven inch tablet, but it certainly won't be the last. The rest of its specifications are in line with what you would expect from a high-end Android tablet, with the exception of the screen which only sports a resolution of 800x480, a bit lower than most other high-end tablets. Dell doesn't advertise the amount of RAM the Streak 7 has but judging from system information on memory usage it seems the Streak 7 is packing about 512MB (360MB was available according the Linux Kernel, we're still waiting for an official actual number from Dell).

Little Story About Motorola Xoom

Motorola Xoom
The Motorola Xoom was launched at CES, and we saw it again at MWC before it shipped on Feb. 24. In terms of hardware, the Motorola tablet offers some impressive features – including Nvidia’s dual-core “Tegra 2”  processor, which delivers great performance and makes the Xoom very responsive with speedy web browsing and a fluid 3D gaming experience. It’s the first 10.1-inch tablet featuring Android 3.0, codenamed Honeycomb, to hit the market.

Royal wedding boosts Internet traffic, crashes BBC website

The royal wedding resulted in a massive surge in Internet traffic around the world yesterday, and while most organizations handled the extra demand without too many problems, it did cause the BBC website's live video feed to crash.

As life on the streets of central London slowly returns to some semblance of normality following yesterday’s royal wedding, a picture is starting to emerge of the kind of impact the day’s events had on web traffic.
The UK’s BBC website, which can usually handle masses of visitors with both hands tied behind its back, found itself crumbling under the enormous weight of extra traffic to its site. Web pages took longer than usual to load, and a video feed of the wedding ceremony playing on the website crashed.

The feed was replaced with an “Error 500 – Internal Error” message telling viewers, “This might be because we are experiencing abnormal traffic to our network.” – though there was clearly no “might” about it. Interestingly, YouTube‘s live feed, which was being supplied by the BBC, carried on working.

Hackers cash in on Royal Wedding with spam and malware attacks

In wearily predictable fashion, security vendors have been quick to warn about increasing volumes of Royal Wedding-related spam, scams and malicious software.

Symantec outlined in a blog post various spam campaigns hoping to cash in on the big day by advertising items including a replica of Princess Diana's engagement ring, a 'limited edition Buckingham Mint Royal Wedding Commemorative Coin' and limited edition customisable mugs and t-shirts.

Blackhat SEO attackers have also predictably used the event to attract news-hungry surfers to malicious sites.
Symantec said it has seen over 500 compromised sites used in this campaign over the past few days.

"Attackers create multiple fake pages on each site and use unethical SEO techniques - such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, and link farming - to ‘game' the search engine algorithms to achieve high search engine rankings," the firm said.

"When searching for information on the internet, make sure your legitimate anti-virus software is updated and be wary of scam pages asking you to download ‘anti-virus' software."

Slightly shaky research conducted by security firm Imperva at this year's Infosecurity Europe event confirmed the stats.
It revealed that 38 per cent of security professionals have seen the wedding being used for 'malvertising', 34 per cent have observed related spam and 20 per cent have seen incidents of blackhat SEO.

Little Story About iPhone 4

iPhone 4 Review
The iPhone 4 is the culmination of years of refining Apple’s iPhone line of products. One by one, Apple has improved features and the latest iteration enhances a number of important elements like display, camera (with Flash), dual-microphone, larger battery and multi-tasking – just to cite a few.The design itself has been updated to use steel and aluminosilicate glass, which is ultra-resistant to scratches (but not shocks). The new antenna design has been generating a ton of controversy recently because of interferences caused by the contact between the user’s hand and the phone itself. So, how bad is it? I will tell you what works and what doesn’t, without sugar-coating or politics. Let’s dive in.

Context: First of all, I have received a ton of emails asking when this review would come out. Sorry for the wait, but I wanted to use the phone for a while to let the hype/excitement/first impressions go. Thanks for your patience.

We all use our phones differently, so it’s important that I tell you where I come from: I have been using the iPhone 4 for weeks as my main phone. I typically check my email often with Exchange, and I reply moderately because the virtual keyboard is not as productive as a physical one. I browse the web several times a day to check on news sites, but I rarely watch movies or play music. I don’t call much – maybe 10mn a day, if at all. This usage pattern will affect battery life and my perception of which features are useful (or not).
