American Idol Talk: Femme vs. Femme

Girl power gone bad on "American Idol"?
The Top 11 double elimination (or in truth, putting off the inevitable after the Casey Abrams save) sent Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia to the exit door. While the two have been good sports about their drop, Adedapo observed during a teleconference that female contestants may have it harder because teen girls vote with their crushes.
That has been an "Idol" truism for years (exhibits why-won't-they-go-away A & B: Sanjaya Malakar, season 6, and Tim Urban, season 9). Girls experiencing hormonal surges make the decisions, until their mothers finally wrest away the cell phone and decide the winner. (Except perhaps the year Kris Allen won.)
Is there indeed a generational breakdown? First, let's review the global searches, which ranks two female contestants at the top:

(global)
1. Pia Toscano (Howard Beach, NY)
2. Haley Reinhart (Wheeling, Ill.)
3. Casey Abrams (Wilmette, Ill.)
4. James Durbin (Santa Cruz, Calif.)
5. Scott McCreery (Garner, NC)
6. Lauren Alaina (Rossville, GA)
7. Paul McDonald (Huntsville, Ala.)
8. Stefano Langone (Kent, Wash.)
9. Jacob Lusk (Compton, Calif.)
Among teen girls, Scott (or Scotty, as people search for him now) looks like he's secured heartthrob status, while Pia falls three slots down:

The older (and wiser?) core audience's ranking also gives Haley closer consideration, but the ladies are charmed by young Lauren and Scotty. Stefano rises far higher in estimation than among the other two groups, but Casey has to worry about courting the ladies.
As for Jacob, his performances may win kudos week after week, but his personal appeal isn't pulling a steady online following.
